Performing Architecture

A programme of the Goethe-Institut from 5 June till 23 November 2014.

In cooperation with the German Contribution to the 14th International Architecture Exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia and the Teatro Fondamenta Nuove.

Tracing the seams where architecture, choreography and performance meet, PERFORMING ARCHITECTURE will aim to create experimental, interdisciplinary spaces for thought and sensory experience. Choreographers, composers and theatre performers will direct their keen sense of focus honed by the performing arts to explore the impact, meanings and social relevance of architecture. Theatre venues, exhibition spaces and the cityscape of Venice will be transformed in unexpected ways, filled with projections and charged with sensory stimuli to create new realms of physical experience for visitors and performers alike.

The programme is a contribution of Goethe-Institut to Biennale di Venezia and will restate the theme of the German Pavilion – “Absorbing Modernity 1914-2014” – which Rem Koolhaas has developed for the 14th Architecture Exhibition in Venice. The events will address several questions of contemporary social relevance: how to find forms of expression suited to transformative situations? Can social change be realised in artistic processes? Finally, how are representational forms linked to historical processes and cultural memory?
